Launch of skill development initiative for domestic workers/household assistants

New Delhi (ILO News) – International Labour Organization (ILO) in collaboration with Ministry of Labour and Employment, Government of India and the Government of NCT of Delhi will launch the “Skills Development Initiative for Domestic Workers/Household Assistants” on Saturday, 4 July 2009, at Silver Oaks, India Habitat Centre, Lodi Road, New Delhi. The Launch will be inaugurated by the Honorable Chief Minister of Delhi, Smt. Sheila Dikshit at 12 noon.

The Delhi Government, the Ministry of Labour and Employment and ILO have joined hands to kick-start a pilot training programme to skill and re-skill domestic workers/household assistants across the Delhi and Noida region. The Pilot programme is part of a broader programme, Skill Development Initiative for Domestic Workers/Household Assistants, which aims to improve the service of domestic work as well as to enhance the employability and living and working conditions of domestic workers. The Pilot programme will initially target 250 trainees before scaling up to cover a larger number of domestic workers.

The initiative views skill development as an entry point for professionalizing and organizing domestic workers. It unpacks skill sets required for various types of domestic work and presents a career progression route within domestic work. Trainees will be officially registered and given a skills card which will enable prospective employers to identify their skill sets and background. The initiative is linked with the Ministry’s Modular Employable Skills (MES) Scheme, which enables successful trainees to obtain official recognition of their skills, a National Council for Vocational Training (NCVT) certificate, at the end of training.
