Launch of new study on labour market effects of AEC 2015

A new study on how labour markets will be affected by deeper ASEAN integration will be launched by the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the Asian Development Bank (ADB), in Jakarta, on Wednesday 20 August.

JAKARTA (ILO News) - The ASEAN Economic Community (AEC), which comes into effect in 2015 will allow for a freer flow of skilled labour, service, investment and goods among the ten ASEAN Member States, potentially affecting the livelihoods of the 600 million women and men who live there.

The report “ASEAN Community 2015: Managing integration for better jobs and shared prosperity” examines the impact of the AEC on labour markets using economic model simulations. It highlights the challenges and opportunities that will accompany the AEC, including managing labour migration, boosting productivity and wages, improving job quality, and supporting the required structural changes and regional cooperation. The report also offers policy recommendations for creating better jobs and ensuring that the benefits of the AEC are equitably shared.

The report will be unveiled at a presentation ceremony and will then be presented to the media at a press conference. Afterwards, the findings will be discussed by a high-level panel on “Opportunities and challenges of ASEAN integration for better jobs and shared prosperity”.

Those taking part are expected to include Yoshiteru Uramoto, ILO Assistant Director-General and Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific, Arjun Goswami, Director, Office of Regional Economic Integration of the ADB., H.E. Le Luong Minh, ASEAN Secretary-General, H.E. Alicia Dela Rosa Bala, ASEAN Deputy Secretary-General, the Minister of Manpower and Transmigration of Indonesia, the Coordinating Minister for the Economy of Indonesia, and representatives of regional employers’ and workers’ organizations. The panel discussion will be moderated by Sharanjit Leyl, Presenter of BBC Business Asia.
