A Good Labour Practices (GLP) programme for Thailand’s fishing sector will be launched by the Department of Labour Protection and Welfare (DLPW), Department of Fisheries (DOF) and fisheries industry representatives on 16 September 2013 in Bangkok.
The Good Labour Practices (GLP) programme is a comprehensive fisheries industry improvement programme that combines establishment of industry guidelines with a supportive good labour practices training programme.

The launch will be presided by Pol. Capt. Chalerm Ubumrung, Minister of Labour, Mr Siriwat Kajornprasart, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives, and Mr Maurizio Bussi, Officer-in-Charge of the ILO Country Office for Thailand, Cambodia and Lao PDR.

The GLP guidelines aim to address unacceptable forms of labour and promote existing laws and regulation, in particular on child labour and forced labour, and to promote a culture of compliance within the industry. Customized GLP guidelines are developed for each fisheries industry sector: fishing, marine shrimp farms, primary processing and processing/packing factories.

The GLP guidelines for the primary processing sector and a supportive GLP training programme for the shrimp and seafood processing sector in Thailand will be released at the event. Some 150 representatives of seafood industry enterprises will sign a pact to respect the principles of the GLP guidelines and participate in the GLP training programme. The GLP guidelines will be available on the ILO website at: www.ilo.org/asia on Monday, 16 September 2013.

The GLP programme is technically supported by the International Labour Organization (ILO) through its International Programme on the Elimination of Child Labour (IPEC) in Thailand. Trade Unions and civil society groups in Thailand have also been part of developing the programme.

The launch will be held on Monday 16 September, at the Rama Garden Hotel Convention Hall, 9/9 Vibhavadi Rangsit Road, Laksi, starting at 10.00 a.m. The launch will be followed by a press conference that will start at 11.30 a.m.

Simultaneous English-Thai interpretation will be provided.
