Launch of the Certified Apprenticeship Programme in Hotel Operations for Zanzibar, 17 August 2017

Dar es Salaam (ILO News) Promotion of decent work opportunities entails among other things supporting development and implementation of Skills development policies and strategies that enhance employability, productivity and inclusiveness of growth.

The ILO provides technical assistance to governments and social partners to design and develop pro-poor, market relevant skills including quality apprenticeships to counteract the growing skills mismatch between supply and demand sides of the labour market.

The ILO in collaboration with the Ministry of Labour, Employment, Elders, Youth, Women and Children (MLEEYWC), Zanzibar, and social partners will on 17 August launch the Certified Apprenticeship Programme in Hotel Operations for Zanzibar. The event, to be officiated by the President of Zanzibar, H.E. Ali Mohamed Shein, is aimed at promoting the programme and raising awareness to more partners to support similar training programmes for the Zanzibar youth. It will further create a platform of engagement and exchange of practices through the networking of national and international partners.

Certified Apprenticeship programme in hotel operations is being implemented in Tanzania (both mainland and Zanzibar) with support from the government of Norway. The programme is aimed at strengthening skills development system to promote access to quality training and employability, especially for young women and men.

To date, the first group of 56 youth from Pemba and Unguja have successfully enrolled in the programme and will training for two academic years. Further, 40 hotel supervisors have been trained on how to administer the program and 30 tutors from the Institute of Tourism have been oriented on the curriculum and over 50 Stakeholders from the public and private sectors have been given an orientation on the programme. Key Project Partners include the Ministry, Zanzibar Trade Union (ZATUC), Zanzibar Employers Association (ZANEMA) and Zanzibar Association of Tourism Investors (ZATI).
