La Paz - In the framework of the ILO's "Bolivia Digna y Productiva" project, on Tuesday 07 September 2021, the awareness campaign " Rethinking Food Heritage with Decent Work:" was launched, in order to promote the reactivation and sustainable development of the quinoa and coffee production chains in Bolivia.
The campaign will amplify, through communication tools, the impact of actions developed with the micro, small and medium-sized companies participating in the new SCORE Agroexports programme.
"SCORE Agroexports - promotes the improvement of working conditions for MSME workers as a fundamental axis to safeguard Bolivia's food heritage, while promoting safe and healthy working environments, as well as new opportunities for access to international markets", said Nina Paustian, Regional Coordinator of the ILO SCORE project.
Due to the pandemic, demand for quinoa fell during the first half of 2020, and many micro, small and medium-sized enterprises in the processing and export of this grain became sole proprietorships or fell into informality.

In this regard, Chandni Lanfranchi, ILO Technical Officer for SME Development and Formalization in Bolivia, mentioned that the campaign "seeks to create spaces to reflect upon working conditions in two sectors with high export potential: quinoa and coffee over the next three months".
A network of more than 150 actors in the Bolivian gastronomic food system, including producers, processors, cooks and consumers, have joined the campaign, and are committed to disseminating the materials among their key audiences. By so doing, it is expected that the campaign will contribute to raising awareness on the importance of sustainable food production, regional cuisines with identity and the life stories of producers involved in the processing chains of quinoa and coffee.
This initiative also strengthens the efforts of the ILO and the Confederation of Private Entrepreneurs of Bolivia (CEPB), as implementing partner of the SCORE Programme in Bolivia, to reactivate, diversify and develop national production in response to the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic in the country.
