On May 29 the event was launched by Alexander Karpov, Deputy Governor for Social Policies, Ekaterina Ivanova, Focal Point for HIV/AIDS and the World of Work in the Russian Federation (ILO Moscow Office), and Igor Ksenofontov, Head of the Labour and Employment Department.

In his address to the workshop participants, Mr. Alexander Karpov noted:

- Unfortunately, the spread of HIV infection is still relevant today, with nearly one million people diagnosed in Russia and seven thousand in the Trans-Urals. The morbidity rate among workers is of particular concern. It is essential to make sure that HIV prevention is dealt with not only by health professionals but also employers. Workers should acquire more knowledge on how to prevent the disease.

Ekaterina Ivanova told that the ILO has gained a considerable experience regarding HIV prevention at work including in the Urals. This year the Kurgan Region has become the first in the Urals Federal District to organise such an event:

- Our task is to encourage those aged between 30 and 50 to find out their HIV status and pass the test without fear because unfortunately the population still lacks proper understanding that the earlier the disease is detected and the sooner the treatment starts, it will be more effective and less toxic for the patient. Consequently, the worker living with HIV/AIDS will not lose his ability to work and will continue to earn a living for his family and benefit from a gratifying and productive life.

The workshops will be attended by health professionals, HR staff, unionists from the region’s enterprises, representatives of the regional AIDS Center who will discuss and develop model HIV/AIDS prevention programs jointly with trainers and hold disease prevention sessions based on the latest technologies.

The event will end up on June 1 with free anonymous HIV testing at “Korvet” company.

The educational events are organised by the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection of Russia and ILO supported by the regional government, Trade Union Federation of the Kurgan Region and the regional AIDS Center.
