Lao teachers' sharpen tailoring skills through South-South Cooperation

VIENTIANE, The Lao People’s Democratic Republic (ILO News) – Teachers in the Lao People’s Democratic Republic have gained advanced tailoring skills to pass on to their vocational students through the support of the ILO-China Partnership Programme.
Held in Vientiane, from 28 to 31 January 2025, teachers from the Lao Women’s Training Center took part in a training session provided by counterparts from the Dongguan Technician College of China.

Aimed at enhancing employability and promoting gender equality, the intensive training workshop equipped 13 Lao teachers, 11 of whom are women, with essential tailoring skills. The training also provided educators with cutting-edge strategies for effective classroom management, the integration of practical skills into their lessons, and the improvement of their teaching methodologies.

“This training has been well received by the Lao Women’s Union and praised for its practical approach and positive impact on women's skill development,” said Tian Feng, Project Manager and Coordinator of the ILO-China Partnership Programme. “These new abilities not only foster economic self-sufficiency but also contribute significantly to the broader community’s development.”

These teachers will now pass on their newly acquired knowledge by training groups of women. This will help address the skills gap and create pathways for stable and decent employment in the tailoring sector.

The ILO/China Partnership Project on Strengthening Skills Development in Cambodia, Lao PDR and Myanmar through South-South and Triangular Cooperation (SSTC) works closely with the government, workers’ and employers’ organizations in the Lao People’s Democratic Republic to promote skills development and ensure access to decent work for all.

Additionally, this project places a strong emphasis on promoting gender equality. Implemented in partnership with the Women's Union, it prioritizes the delivery of targeted skills training tailored to women’s employment needs.

Since 2020, through the ILO/China Partnership Programme, more than 129,527 individuals in the Lao People’s Democratic Republic have benefited from initiatives such as apprenticeship training, job fairs, and skills competitions.
