Lao teachers learn tailoring and bakery skills from Chinese counterparts

VIENTIANE (ILO News) – Six teachers from the Lao Women’s Training Center have returned from an intensive skills exchange programme in China equipped with new expertise in tailoring, bakery production and training methods.

The initiative, which took place with the support of the International Labour Organization (ILO)/China Partnership Project on Strengthening Skills Development in ASEAN through South-South and Triangular Cooperation, forms part of an ongoing series of activities to expand opportunities for women and strengthen skills development in the Lao People’s Democratic Republic.

Held at Dongguan Technician College in Dongguan city, Guangdong Province from 11-15 May 2026, participants took part in tailoring training on making women’s suits. Meanwhile, the bakery training introduced a range of products, including roujiamo bread, tiramisu and bao pastries.

Participants gained valuable hands-on experience in safely operating tailoring and bakery machinery and applying effective training methodologies. The sessions also incorporated elements of waste management to promote green skills and environmental sustainability.

In addition, the participants engaged in an exchange programme with the Dongguan Women’s Union, focusing on promoting gender equality, advancing women’s skills, and sharing experiences in the management of women’s organizations in both countries.

“Participants expressed their appreciation for the ILO–China Partnership Project, highlighting how the training enhanced their professional capabilities and provided valuable opportunities for personal growth,” said Chansamone Senghalath, Deputy Director of the Lao Women’s Training Center, Lao Women’s Union.

“They plan to transfer their knowledge to women trainees, helping to address skills gaps and create pathways to stable and decent employment.”
