Lao PDR’s National Job Fair attracts thousands of people
The Lao People’s Democratic Republic’s National Job Fair attracts more than 1,200 job seekers, with more than 100 booths set-up and more than 1,000 vacancies announced and posted.

The Lao People’s Democratic Republic’s Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare (MoLSW) organized the National Job Fair in Vientiane at the National Convention Centre on 5-6 June 2015.
With support from the People’s Republic of China through the ILO’s technical cooperation project referred to as the ILO/China South-South Cooperation Project to Expand Employment Services and Enhance Labour Market Information in Cambodia and Lao PDR, and in collaboration with Lao National Chamber of Commerce and Industry and private agencies, the Job Fair aims to improve labour market efficiency and participation, reducing unemployment and enhancing links and information flows between job seekers and employers.
H.E. Mr Thongsing Thammavong, the Prime Minister of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, presided over the inaugural session, a gesture reinforcing the importance the government places on employment promotion, which can strengthen the economy and enhance social stability.
The inaugural session was also presided over by H.E. Ms Onechanh Thammavong, Minister of Labour and Social Welfare and H.E. Ms Baykham Khattiya, Vice Minister of Labour and Social Welfare. The ILO was represented by Mr Maurizio Bussi. In addition, representatives of key government departments, development organizations and private sectors were also present.
Speaking during the inaugural session, the Minister of Labour and Social Welfare, H.E. Ms Onechanh Thammavong, said that enhancing the productivity of the economy was key to economic growth and poverty reduction, and improving productivity could not be done without skills development.
“Such a National Job Fair, supported by the ILO/China South-South Cooperation Project, is essential for the country to achieve and sustain economic growth, and translate that growth into the creation of more and better jobs, leading to poverty reduction,” said Ms Thammavong.
“This Job Fair is an integral part of the various public employment services mechanisms implemented by the Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare in supporting a job-rich and inclusive growth” said ILO’s Representative Maurizio Bussi.
“Changing patterns of work are likely to influence trends in both aggregate demand and in the overall relationship between economic growth, on the one hand, and employment and productivity on the other. As a result, creating more and better jobs remains a key policy priority for many ASEAN countries.” said Mr Bussi.
The ILO is the United Nations specialized agency that deals with labour and work-related issues. The ILO’s unique tripartite structure brings together representatives of governments, employers and workers to jointly shape policies and programmes, with the aim of promoting Decent Work for All. In Lao People's Democratic Republic these tripartite constituents are represented by the Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare, the Lao Federation of Trade Unions, and the Lao National Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
