Labour market reforms in Greece

On 29 May, the Employment and Social Affairs Committee of the European Parliament organized an exchange of views on labour market reforms in Greece. Heinz Koller, ILO Regional Director for Europe and Central Asia, took part.
The ILO has provided support to the Greek government and the social partners since the outbreak of the financial crisis, focussing in particular on the preservation of social dialogue. Referring to an ILO Report "Evaluating the effects of the structural labour market reforms on collective bargaining in Greece" of December 2016, Mr Koller stressed that the evolution of collective bargaining in the country is a source of concern. Whereas in 2009, 85% of employees were covered by collective agreements, in 2016 only an estimated 10 to 20% were in that situation.
In addition to providing technical assistance and supervising compliance with international labour standards, the ILO is implementing together with the Greek social partners a number of EU-financed programmes in Greece including on the fight against undeclared work.
