Kazakhstan focuses attention on child labour
On October 29, Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Labour and Social Protection of Population hosted a roundtable meeting that discussed the elimination of the worst forms of child labour.

Some progress has been made through joint efforts of the government, non-governmental organizations and business community. Kazakhstan has held nationwide awareness raising campaigns, implemented socially relevant projects and drafted a national action plan for 2012-2014.
Deputy Minister of Labour and Social Protection of Population Kairat Absattarov said until the end of the year the ILO would end its project to eliminate the worst forms of child labour. He expressed gratitude to coordinators of the ILO International Programme on the Elimination of Child Labour for technical support and Kazakhstan’s Goods Manufacturers and Exporters Union for assistance in the project to eliminate child labour in the tobacco industry. In October this sector was withdrawn from the list of industries that use child labour.
Participants in the meeting – members of parliament, experts from NGOs and international organizations – stressed importance of awareness raising campaigns among the population and of support for low-income families that have to send their children to earn money.
The ILO-IPEC project on establishing a child labour monitoring system in the Maktaaral district that had been implemented in South Kazakhstan Region since April 2013 was cited as positive experience. The region regularly organizes raids that allow to uncover cases of child labour in cotton fields, holds monitoring of school drop-outs and enhances vocational training among senior high school students.
