Kazakhstan ’s Labour and Social Protection Ministry represented a national Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) profile on March 19.

It is practice-proven that OSH requirements can be effectively implemented at the national and enterprise level only with the help of an OSH systematic approach and the participation of all social partners in controlling and upgrading regular OSH activities.
The profile is aimed at analyzing the country’s OSH situation and the level of occupational accidents and diseases and at drafting new OSH laws and upgrading effective laws. The government as well as representative associations of employers and trade unions should be engaged.
The preparation of a national OSH profile is an important step in the process of creating realistic and effective national OSH programme. The profile helps consider and assess the country’s instruments and resources to implement and upgrade the OSH management system.
The national profile describes the Kazakhstan’s social partnership mechanisms, including public OSH control.
Kazakhstan has worked out necessary standards related to the OSH management system. The Republic has the OSH research institute as well as vocational training centres to train and retrain occupational safety specialists.

Taking part in the presentation were Kazakh Labour and Social Protection Minister Berdybek Saparbayev, ILO experts Wiking Husberg and Roman Litvyakov and representatives of national employers’ associations and trade unions. The ILO experts presented the Guidelines on occupational safety and health management system (ILO-OSH 2001).
