Kampala: Training Seminar on HIV/AIDS

Kampala, 20 april 2011 (ACTRAV INFO)- About 15 trade union organizations took part in a training seminar on HIV/AIDS, held from 18-20 April 2011 in Kampala, Uganda.

The participants, who came from Côte d’Ivoire, Kenya, Malawi, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia, shared their experiences of drawing up strategies to combat HIV/AIDS.

The seminar produced encouraging results, particularly as regards training and awareness-building among workers about HIV/AIDS. “Positive outcomes from this seminar include the establishment of a partnership with the employers’ organizations at the regional and national levels”, reported Mohamed Mwamadzingo, ACTRAV’s representative at the seminar. “Also, trade union training materials on HIV/AIDS have been developed, published and distributed. These are available in English, French, Portuguese and Swahili. And there have been expanded educational activities for union reps, so they can make workers in these countries more aware of HIV/AIDS”, added Mr. Mwamadzingo.

The seminar was organized by ITUC-Africa, the Norwegian Confederation of Trade Unions (LO-Norway), and the National Organization of Trade Unions (NOTU-Uganda).
