Instructors of Indonesian TVETs get ready to shift to online training

Reni Datra, 36 years old, an instructor at the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Center in Jeneponto, South Sulawesi, could not hide her joy being selected as a participant for the second batch of the training on content creation and delivery of online training offered particularly for TVETs’ instructors.

She was one of the 120 participants selected through a strict process from 1,100 instructors who had applied for this training. "Even though I am at the stage of early pregnancy, I am excited to participate in this training and hope everything will go well," she wished during the launch of the second batch on 13 October.

The second batch of the training, which will last for three months, has sparked great interests from instructors, indicated by double increased in number of participants and by the coverage extension of provinces from the previous batch.

This training programme is organized by the ILO in collaboration with the Ministry of Manpower to accelerate the transformation of digital learning in public TVETs. The first batch was conducted in June and July with the participation of 60 instructors from 21 provinces.

Fauziah, Director of Instructors and Training Personnel of the Ministry of Manpower, emphasized the importance of improving the capacity of TVETs’ instructors to conduct online training, given that the COVID-19 pandemic has limited the face-to-face learning process.

Meanwhile, Michiko Miyamoto, ILO Country Director for Indonesia, highlighted the crucial role of TVETs’ instructors as the vanguard of digital transformation and skills improvement in driving the revitalization of the Indonesian economy.

This training continues similar, main topics of online learning, such as online training transformation, application of learning management systems and online training simulations. The difference is that the second batch will provide additional topics on the use of multimedia tools to create online training content as well as on public speaking to enhance the ability of instructors to deliver training materials in a more attractive manner.

Navitri Putri Guillaume, the National Project Officer for Women in STEM project, hopes that the instructors in this second batch will not only grasp the training materials, but also practically apply what they learnt about online training in their TVETs. "This training is not only comprehensive and intensive, but also interactive," said Navitri.

This training program is conducted by the ILO through its Women in STEM Workforce Readiness and Development Programme. Funded by J.P. Morgan Chase Foundation, this programme aims to provide women with important technical and soft skills that help them finding quality jobs and support their career advancements, especially in the field related to information and communication technology.
