The International Labour Organization (ILO) will hold a tripartite information session on "Ouagadougou + 10", the African Union Extraordinary Summit on Employment, Poverty Eradication and Inclusive Development to be held in September 2014.
GENEVA– The International Labour Organization (ILO) will hold a tripartite information session on “Ouagadougou + 10”, the African Union Extraordinary Summit on Employment, Poverty Eradication and Inclusive Development (September 2014), on Thursday 5th June.
The interactive session will be chaired by Guy Ryder, Director-General of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) in the presence of the African Union (AU) Commissioner for Social Affairs, Dr Mustapha Kaloko.
This high level platform for tripartite consultation will be moderated by Aeneas Chuma, ILO Regional Director for Africa. The session is open to African tripartite delegates (Government, Workers, and Employers) of the 54 Member States of the AU attending the ILO’s Annual International Labour Conference as well as other interested development partners.
The programme includes key remarks from the tripartite representatives followed by a presentation by Raymond Torres, Director of the ILO Research Department.
With 10 to 12 million young Africans looking for jobs each year, the objective of the “Ouagadougou +10” Summit is not only to make a comprehensive review of progress and constraints in the implementation of the 2004 Ouagadougou Declaration and Plan of Action but also to consider, revise and propose new policies and programs on employment and poverty alleviation.
“Ouaga+10” Summit will therefore aim at adopting a concrete roadmap for the decade 2014-2024 and develop a common position of African leaders as part of the agenda for the post 2015 development.
The Ouagadougou 2004 Declaration, Plan of Action and Follow up Mechanism on Employment and Poverty Alleviation adopted by African leaders was a milestone in the fight against poverty and unemployment.
Ten years later, the African Union Extraordinary Summit would take place in September 2014 to give a renewed impetus to the fight against unemployment, poverty and jobless-growth in Africa.
