Indonesian electronic industry to improve productivity and efficiency through social dialogue

JAKARTA (ILO News): Representatives of major companies in the electronic industry, trade unions, employers’ organizations and the Ministry of Manpower and Transmigration discussed the importance of social dialogue between employers and workers to improve the productivity and efficiency of the electronics industry in Indonesia in Bogor, West Java, from 21 – 23 June.

The 40 participants actively debated the benefits, problems and challenges of social dialogue. They identified obstacles in conducting social dialogue, such as lack of mutual trust and respect, lack of transparency. They also examined ways to improve the communications between the employers and workers not only at the plant level, but also at the sectoral level.

“Social dialogue was seen as instrumental in securing more productive and efficient workplaces. Dialogue between employers and workers would help to solve problems without prolonged conflicts and would attract investments as well as secure employment,” stated David Seligson, ILO Specialist on Manufacturing.

This three-day workshop concluded with the plan to compile best practices of social dialogue in the industry for dissemination. The workshop also called for a sectoral social dialogue, comprising of electronics and telematics, to be established between the employers’ federations and trade union federations, with support from the government.
