ILO at Zambia’s Jobs and Inclusive Growth Dialogue

LUSAKA (ILO News) – The International Labour Organization’s Assistant Director-General and Regional Director for Africa, Mr. Aeneas Chapinga Chuma will be in Lusaka, Zambia to address and moderate the High Level Stakeholder Dialogue Event entitled “Zambia’s Way Forward: Job Creation to Promote Inclusive Growth”.

The conference will take place in Lusaka at the Mulungushi Conference Center on the 24th and 25th of November 2014 with the participation of international and Zambian speakers, including ministers and government officials, academics and researchers, cooperating partners, civil society, and business men and women from the private sector.

The event will address key challenges and explore real opportunities for achieving job creation and promotion of inclusive growth in Zambia. It will also showcase innovative Zambian best practices for creating decent jobs and promoting entrepreneurship.

According to the IMF, Zambian economy continues to grow at a rapid pace but fiscal and exchange rate developments point to significant vulnerabilities. Growth is projected to remain strong at 6.5 percent in 2014 but the government together with development partners recognized the challenge of creating inclusive growth that not only ensures a continually growing economy, but also creates more employment opportunities for the large part of the population, particularly the youth.

Key issues to be discussed focus on achieving pro-poor structural transformation in the agriculture sector, financial inclusion, growth and inequality, and how to improve productivity in Zambia through skills development.

On the 25th November, Mr. Chuma will also take part in an “Interactive Tripartite-Plus Dialogue” to interact directly with representatives of the Ministry of Labour and Social Security as well as the social partners of Zambia.
