ILO Türkiye Office at the Field with PRM Before the 2023 Ends

İzmir (ILO News) – The ILO Office for Türkiye Officers paid two days visit to İzmir, Manisa, Denizli with officials from the Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration (PRM) to meet with the local stakeholders, partners, and the beneficiaries.
The visit was kicked off at female led Halka Women’s Cooperative which provides cleaning services in İzmir. Machinery, equipment, as well as technical support, such as Occupational Health and Safety trainings, were provided to strengthen Halka Cooperative’s resilience in the labour market and ensure its sustainability. The Cooperative members had the opportunity to emphasize the opportunities and the challenges encountered as one of the SSE units. The cooperative members laid stress on the importance of the social procurement and their need for a longer Transition to Formality Programme (KİGEP)Program apart from raising their other long-term expectations and needs.
This visit continued with Rond Textile firm which is a beneficiary of ILO Programs such as Workplace Adaptation Program and KIGEP. After being informed about the structure of the firm and how they benefitted from the programs; the refugee workers and ILO beneficiaries participated the meeting to answer the questions of the donor and the ILO Officials regarding their work, lives in Türkiye.
The delegation continued its visits by paying a courtesy visit to Manisa Social Security Institution to get to know more on labour market dynamics in Manisa and reach a better understanding of the institutional stance and the issues regarding the Programs executed in the region.
The delegation is welcomed warmly by the SSI and according to the information obtained from SSI, both parties declared their intentions to make the processes easier for both the refugees and the host communities.
At the second day of the visit, the Delegation’s first meeting was at Denizli Chamber of Industry where there was also a very warm welcome from the Chamber.
After the brief introduction of both parties, the President raised the topic on the needs of the workforce in the region such as skilled and unskilled intermediate staff from refugees and host communities, with an emphasis on qualified vocational education system. He also pointed out the importance of the guidance from the respective public institutions on refugees’ participation to labour force in order to prevent informality in industrial sectors, adding the importance of the adaptation of the workers from different socio-cultural and economic backgrounds. In the upcoming time he considered providing information meetings on work permit regulations necessary on provincial level.
Denizli Organised Industrial Zone (OSB) was the next stop, where after marking the needs and the requests of the industries of the region, a KIGEP beneficiary employer and the employee from a middle-scaled textile company participated in the meeting; talked about their successful employment and hiring a refugee journey that both sides are satisfied not only economically but also socially.
The last meeting of the visit was to meet with the beneficiaries at Denizli Pano Firm which is also a beneficiary of KIGEP. The delegation held a short meeting with the beneficiaries regarding their labour market integration and lives in Türkiye.
These visits are made possible through gift of the United States Government and cooperation by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration under the Supporting Resilience and Social Cohesion with Decent Livelihood Opportunities Project.
