ILO Turkey Organizes a Week of Awareness-Raising Events Around 12 June World Day Against Child Labour

ANKARA (ILO NEWS) – The International Labour Organization (ILO) Office for Turkey organized a series of awareness-raising events both for 2021 International Year for the Elimination of Child Labour and 12 June World Day Against Child Labour to amplify the message “End Child Labour”.
A series of visibility activities in the week of 10-17 June in cooperation with Istanbul and Ankara Metropolitan Municipalities and Atakule GYO, media action, videos with celebrities, field visits and social media messaging drew public attention to this significant issue.
Posters placed on billboards, urban screens, busses and metro-cars in Istanbul and Ankara publicised the message #EndChildLabour, while Atakule, a landmark of the capital, was lit in blue in the night of 12 June to raise awareness on eliminating child labour. In addition, the hashtag #EndChildLabour was displayed both on the tower and on the giant screen at the entry of Atakule.
In collaboration with the Actors' Union of Turkey, a set of videos were recorded with renowned Yiğit Özşener, Demet Evgar, Zuhal Olcay, Demet Akbağ and Selçuk Yöntem, and released to the public.
Mr. Numan Özcan, Director of the ILO Office for Turkey, and ILO Turkey officials gave various interviews to TV channels, radios and print media to transmit the message to a wider audience.
ILO Turkey officials also paid a series of visits during the week. On 12 June, a visit was paid to the site where agricultural workers and families stayed at Sarıoba village of Polatlı district by a high-level delegation including Mr. Vedat Bilgin, Minister of Labour and Social Security; Mr. Numan Özcan, Director of the ILO Office for Turkey; Mr. Alvaro Rodriguez, UN Turkey Resident Coordinator; Mr. Angel Gutierrez Hidalgo, First Counsellor, EU Delegation to Turkey; and Ms. Regina de Dominicis, UNICEF Representative. The delegation reviewed on site the activities under the EU-funded project of ILO through which various services were provided to families to prevent child labour in seasonal agriculture.
Then, a delegation of ILO and Ministry officials visited Ordu on 17 June to meet and discuss with the stakeholders from 7 provinces (Sakarya, Düzce, Zonguldak, Samsun, Ordu, Giresun and Trabzon) where ILO was implementing a project to eliminate child labour in seasonal hazelnut agriculture in the Black Sea Region.
Both visits and visibility activities were widely covered in the media. During 10-18 June 2021, “Child Labour” was reported as news 84 times, including 20 nationwide, at national and local media, reaching 2,405,784 people.
The statement by ILO and UNICEF on the occasion of 12 June World Day Against Child Labour was reported as web news 274 times and received 4,115,945 hits in total in Turkey.
