ILO trains Angolan journalists in Social Protection

Between the 13th and 15th of March, the first training course in social protection aimed at journalists took place in Luanda, at the CEFOJOR facilities, with the participation of 40 trainees from more than 20 media outlets.

This course, funded by the Delegation of the European Union to Angola, through the project "Expansion of Social Security to Support the Formalization of the Angolan Economy" and by the ACTION/Portugal project, aimed to create greater literacy and culture of social protection in Angolan society, through journalistic work, promote debate and scrutiny of policies, access to reliable information and reflect on appealing ways of presenting information on social protection.

The opening session was attended by the Secretary of State for Social Communication, Nuno dos Anjos Caldas Albino, the Head of Cooperation of the European Union, Enrico Strampelli, the ILO Project Manager, Denise Monteiro and the Director of CEFOJOR, Ikuma Bamba.

The course had as main trainers the Portuguese journalist from Jornal de Negócios Catarina Almeida Pereira and the Social Protection Expert from ILO Lisbon, Mariana Pereira.It also included presentations by the National Director of Social Security, Domingos Filipe, the Director General of FAS - Institute for Local Development, Belarmino Jelembi, and a representative of UNICEF, Marcelo Cohen.

During the three days of training, the course participants had the opportunity to understand concepts and definitions of Social Protection and its relationship with human rights; to know the structure of the social protection system in Angola; to reflect on the coverage of social protection; discuss strategies for access to complete and credible information; analyze articles and journalistic pieces; and participate in practical work on the journalistic processing of data and information on social protection.
