ILO supports Egypt’s textile and ready- made garments exports
Egypt hosted the first Textile Egyptian International Buyers Forum on 14-15, March 2016 to attract new investments into the industry and focus on the global market.
CAIRO (ILO News) - The government of Egypt joined hands with the International Labour Organization (ILO) Cairo Office to support Egypt’s textile and ready- made garments industries by organizing the first of its kind “Textile Egyptian International Buyers Forum” from 14-15 March 2016 in Cairo, Egypt.
H.E Gamal Sorour, Minister of Manpower, Eng. Tarek Kabil, Minister of Trade and Industry, and Mr. Peter van Rooij, ILO Cairo Office Director opened the Forum with the common objective of enhancing productivity, competitiveness and compliance with international standards to further ensure a sustainable growth of the textile industry in Egypt.
This interactive platform, organised under the auspices of the Egyptian Prime Minister, brought together 8 international clothing brands- with investments reaching around 2 billion dollars annually, in addition to representatives from the government, workers and employers organizations, buyers and manufacturers towards improving the working conditions in Egypt’s export factories and the performance of Egypt’s textile market.
“The forum aims to exchange experiences, examine new investment opportunities and shape these industries for a wider range of more competitive markets through fostering the dialogue between leading brands, export factories, and key national stakeholders in Egypt”, Director van Rooij said.
“This is a great event that is paving the way for a continued strategic and practical partnership to realise decent work in key sectors of the economy”, he added.
The two-day forum addressed the textile industry at the national and international levels, challenges, innovations, opportunities and future plans. It was accompanied by a “Textile Display and Matchmaking Exhibit” that allowed more than 40 suppliers to expand their products on a global scale.
This forum was organized within the framework of the ILO’s project "Promoting workers' rights and competitiveness in Egyptian Exports Industries", which aims to promote the competitiveness of Egyptian export factories and improve their compliance to coincide with the global sourcing principles and International brands expectations.
