ILO, Strengthening organised labour engagement in policy review
On 7th -8th April, the first stride to collaborative efforts between the Zambia Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) and the Federation of Free Trade Unions of Zambia (FFTUZ) as Organized Labour in Zambia was made.

These efforts were supported by the ILO through a consultative workshop to strengthen organized labour engagement and participation in the process for the review of the National Employment and Labour Market Policy (NELMP). With a new congress within the labour movement from both ZCTU and FFTUZ, it was imperative to enlighten the new leadership on the Decent Work Agenda, the ILO and the NELMP review process
Mr Martin Clemensson, ILO Country Director highlighted that “the main aims of the ILO are to promote rights at work, encourage decent employment opportunities, enhance social protection and strengthen dialogue on work-related issues.” With government spearheading the process for the revision of the NELMP, the workers used this consultative platform to develop a unified position paper on the draft Situation Analysis which reflects their constituents’ priorities. Putting in place the NELMP implementation plan, monitoring and evaluation strategies were among the priorities that emerged from the workers. Mr. Chingati Msiska, President of FFTUZ urged his colleagues on the need to share information, to unite and fight against any form of labour discrimination, and that by doing so the Labour Movement will be strengthened.
The ILOs’ Workers Specialist Ms Inviolata Chinyangarara insisted that the labour movement needs to be united, disciplined and stand by its position during the policy review process. This entails workers being informed about the various economic implications that macro-policies have on employment and the labour market and thereby bring on board an informed position during the National stakeholders meeting on the Review of the SITAN and Priority Setting on 17th April 2015.
