ILO signs Memorandum of Understanding with the Copperbelt University
The ILO CO-Lusaka, on behalf of the Zambia Green Jobs Programme, signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Copperbelt University School of Built Environment to join hands in the mission of greening the building construction sector.

KITWE - The signing of the MoU signifies the formalisation of a close partnership between the Copperbelt University (CBU) and the Zambia Green Jobs Programme (ZGJP) with the aim to tap into the unexplored potential between the two institutions. The partnership, as stipulated in the MoU, will facilitate access to technical expertise, services and facilities as well as cross-pollination of technical knowledge that will enhance quality and sustainability in the Zambia construction industry.
In his opening remarks, Mr Bernard Mabo, Lecturer and Coordinator, Practice Office, CBU, expressed that incorporating green aspects in their training curricula will shape the mind-sets of young professionals at an early stage in their career. By combining the expertise and networks of the Zambia Green Jobs Programme and the Copperbelt University as many players as possible will be reached ensuring impact in greening the built environment.
The MoU sets the framework for collaboration on several different areas including :-
Mr Tapera Muzira, who signed on behalf of the ILO CO-Lusaka Director Mr Alexio Musindo, highlighted the critical role of the CBU as a strategic partner as the University is a source of supply of expertise in the building construction sector and plays a key role in shaping its future. He stated that the signing of the MoU marks a huge milestone in the work of greening the construction sector.
Dr Shadrick Chama, Acting Vice Chancellor and signing on behalf of the CBU, concluded the ceremony by declaring that the University welcomes all initiatives leading to practical solutions to make the construction sector more sustainable. He expressed the hope for success of the Programme and that it will benefit humanity.
The signing event was held at the Copperbelt University in Kitwe on 16 July 2015.

- The review of the training curriculum and development of sustainable design training courses for students
- Raising public and industry awareness, changing mind-sets and behaviour in green building;
- Research and development of green building materials, products and services including the recognition, testing and standardisation of local traditional green building materials;
- Building demonstrations at the university and in communities for upgrading design, technical and vocational skills; and
- Promoting knowledge and experience sharing in green building design and construction in Zambia.
