ILO Reiterates Commitment to Supporting the Federal Government of Nigeria
With the appointment of a new Permanent Secretary to the Nigerian Ministry of Labour and Employment, the ILO Director pays a courtesy visit to discuss partnership and ongoing policy work with the Government.

ABUJA (ILO News): During the courtesy visit to the newly appointed Permanent Secretary (PS) for the Ministry of Labour and Employment, the PS Ms. Ibukun Odusote welcomed the ILO delegation led by the Director of ILO country office Abuja, Mr Dennis Zulu. She expressed her excitement at working with the organisation and the importance of the partnership between both agencies.
Mr Zulu, congratulated Ms Odusote again on her appointment and stated that the ILO works with the Government primarily through the Ministry, the workers and employers organisation using the Decent Work Country Program (DWCP) as the vehicle of support for the National Development agenda. He informed that the current DWCP 2015-2018 will come to an end this year and steps are being taken to review impact/achievements and develop a new document based on new Government priorities.
Furthermore, he noted that the ILO is currently working with the government on various policies pertaining to the world of work including the development of an Industrial Relations Policy; the review of the Occupational Safety and Health Policy as well as the ongoing Labour Law reviews to mention a few. He added that ILO also supported the development of the recently approved National Employment Policy (NEP) and Social Protection Policy, he enjoined that the Permanent Secretary provide necessary support to the National Employment Policy Committee inaugurated to ensure effective implementation of the NEP.
In addition, Mr Zulu disclosed that the ILO will be celebrating its Centenary globally, as well as its 60th anniversary in Africa in 2019. He informed that a committee had been setup made up of ILO tripartite partners and other stakeholders to ensure partners are included and contribute toward the celebration of the anniversaries. He also said that the Director General, Mr Guy Ryder may visit Nigeria as an expression of how imperative ILO’s mandate is in Nigeria, as the location of the first office in Africa and as part of the ILO Governing Body. He concluded by making assurances of ILO’s commitment to decent work in Nigeria.
In her remarks, the Permanent Secretary, Ms. Odusote expressed appreciation at the support the ILO has provided over the years and a desire to ensure continuous and productive relationship between ILO and the Ministry. As regards the DWCP, she stated that the Ministry is ready to work with the ILO to review the 2018 DWCP and support the formulation of the next DWCP document. In addition, she congratulated the ILO on its Centenary celebration and 60 years land mark in Africa and expressed her excitement at the prospect of receiving the Director General during the celebrations.

She assured the delegates that collaborations between both agencies will support improved quality of delivery of the Ministry’s mandate and accrue benefits for the world of work in Nigeria.
