ILO promoting decent work in India's cotton supply chain

New Delhi, INDIA: The RISE for Impact project is working with farmers in the cotton supply chain to promote decent work through mainstreaming Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work.
The project was requested by a premium textile brand to present before global suppliers that focus on MNE's roles in addressing decent work deficits. The session that involved over 60 suppliers also touched upon the responsibility of brands in proactively ensuring social compliance across their supply chain, starting at the farmer level.
To further its activities, the project has partnered with Confederation of Indian Textile Industry (CITI), and through its subsidiary Cotton Development and Research Association (CDRA) hosted the two farmers meets over two months. Between October and November, ILO-trained trainers from CITI-CDRI created awareness on safety and health for cotton farmers organised at Ratlam, Madhya Pradesh.
National and international stakeholders, representing the Indian government, brands and retailers, farm groups, suppliers, industry associations and civil society organizations came together for a fire-side chat on decent work and sustainable cotton supply chain during organic cotton accelerator’s sector level event in November.
