ILO, through the Sustaining Competitive and Responsible Enterprises (SCORE) programme, promotes decent and sustainable employment opportunities in South Africa

Sustaining Competitive and Responsible Enterprises (SCORE) is an ILO training programme to improve productivity and working conditions in SMEs through better workplace cooperation.
It is a global programme, currently operating in nine countries and covering different industries.
The SCORE curriculum contains five modules: Workplace Cooperation, Quality Management, Cleaner Production, Human Resource Management and Occupational Safety and Health. Each module is delivered as a two-day classroom workshop which is followed by consulting visits to help enterprises to apply the module content in their operations.
The aim of the SCORE project is to promote decent and sustainable employment opportunities, for women and men, in rural nature based tourism areas. SCORE has developed a module that is strategically designed to support Department of Tourism’s programme of Responsible Tourism as well as recently developed Operational Guidelines on Community Based Tourism.
In South Africa, the SCORE Training programme has been adapted to suit implementation in the tourism sector. The training has been delivered in various clusters in the country including Madikwe Game Reserve, Amakhala Game Reserve, Kruger National Park, Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife, Gauteng Province, uMhlathuze Local Municipality, Free State Province, Makana Local Municipality, Buffalo City Metro and most recently Chris Hani & Joe Gqabi and Okhahlamba cluster.
ILO (Pretoria CO/DWT) Director Dr. Joni Musabayana, Enterprise Development Specialist Mr Jens Dyring Christensen and SCORE South Africa National Coordinator, Mr Siyanda Siko met with Davorka Shepherd, Head of the Swiss Economic Cooperation and Development (SECO) to provide progress update on implementation of SCORE Tourism and to request for a no cost extension until end of September 2017. SECO was very glad.
A partnership agreement with Eastern Cape Development Corporation (ECDC) was signed in June 2016 confirming a joint commitment between ILO and ECDC to bring SCORE Training (module 1) to 30 enterprises (including lodges, hotels, resorts and other interested enterprises in the tourism value chain). Second agreement was entered with the Kwa-Zulu Natal Department of Economic Development, Tourism and environmental Affairs (EDTEA) in August 2016. EDTEA has contributed R500’000 towards SCORE Training of Trainers and Training of Enterprises in the three clusters of a) Umhlathuze local municipality, b) Okhahlamba local municipality an c) Jozini local municipality.
