ILO Pretoria Joins UN South Africa in Celebrating 80 Years of the United Nations
The UN’s 80th Anniversary was celebrated at the Pretoria Art Museum, bringing together UN staff, partners, students, and the community for environmental activities, art, and a Climate Action Pledge. The event highlighted collaboration, sustainability, and the UN’s commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals.

Pretoria, South Africa, (ILO News) — The International Labour Organization (ILO) joined the United Nations (UN) family in South Africa to commemorate the 80th Anniversary of the United Nations at the Pretoria Art Museum.
The event, held under the theme “Building Our Future Together,” brought together UN staff, partners, students from Tshwane University of Technology and members of the local community for a day of reflection, environmental action, and artistic celebration.
The commemoration highlighted the UN’s commitment to sustainability and community outreach through a greening and clean-up activity around the museum grounds. Participants also had the opportunity to tour the Pretoria Art Museum, learning about the institution’s efforts to promote creativity, sustainability, and public engagement through art.
The programme included the unveiling of artworks by local environmental artist Natania Botha, and concluded with participants signing a Climate Action Pledge, reaffirming the UN’s collective commitment to environmental stewardship and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Mr. Nelson Muffuh, UN Resident Coordinator in South Africa, and Dr. Meseret Zemedkun, UNEP Representative, delivered key messages underscoring the importance of collaboration and climate action in building a more sustainable future.
As part of the UN Country Team, ILO Pretoria staff joined the activities, reinforcing the Organization’s dedication to the UN’s shared mission of advancing social justice, decent work, and sustainable development for all.
