ILO praises joint flood crisis response by Thai employers & workers

Mr Jiyan Wang, Director of the International Labour Organization (ILO) Country Office for Thailand has welcomed the move by Thailand’s employers’ and workers’ organizations to work together and take a joint initiatives to help alleviate the crisis caused by the flooding.

The two parties held an historic round table bilateral discussion on emergency measures to relieve the impact of the flood disaster on Wednesday 19 October. At the end of the meeting they made joint proposals for working with the government on alleviation and rehabilitation measures that would engage the strength of the employers’ and workers’ organizations in coping with the disaster, and the subsequent recovery and rehabilitation operations.

“By coming together to propose measures to mitigate the damage caused by the flooding to society and the economy, the Thai workers’ and employers’ organizations show they understand the true spirit and significance of social dialogue,” said Mr Wang, speaking in Bangkok. “The country is facing an unprecedented crisis, with its worst flooding in living memory. On behalf of all ILO staff working in Thailand I would like to extend my sincere condolences to the Thai people for this tragedy. Our thoughts are with them. But I am encouraged by the spirit of co-operation that workers and employers are showing, and am confident this will help the country recover as fast as possible”.
