The ILO participates in Spain's National Congress on Occupational Safety and Health, promoting a safe and healthy working environment
The Director of the ILO Office for Spain, Félix Peinado, spoke on the opening day of the Congress held in A Coruña on November 6 and 7, 2024, organized by Spain's National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (INSST).

MADRID (ILO News) – The event brought together over 300 experts and leaders from various sectors with the aim of strengthening and developing effective occupational safety and health (OSH) policies. The Director of the ILO Office for Spain engaged with attendees to analyze the scope and implications of the ILO's declaration of a safe and healthy working environment as a Fundamental Principle and Right at Work, addressing the impacts of climate, digital, and demographic transitions on OSH, the importance of addressing psychosocial risks and mental health, the gender perspective in occupational safety and health, and the value of an integrated approach to safeguarding workers' health and safety, among other key topics.
Over the course of the two days, the development of the Spanish Strategy for Occupational Safety and Health (EESST) 2023–2027 was analyzed. In this context, the Director of the INSST, Aitana Garí, highlighted that the Congress marked the culmination of the first Action Plan of the National Strategy and the beginning of the second. Social partners, business representatives, and trade unions shared their perspectives on the strategy's progress and their priorities for the next phase during a roundtable discussion.
The Congress was inaugurated by the Second Vice President and Minister of Labor and Social Economy, Yolanda Díaz. Various panels and conferences addressed key challenges such as occupational cancer, psychosocial risks, occupational diseases, digitalization and work, gender and occupational health, and the effects of climate change.
