ILO participates at Just Transition Workshop, Trinidad and Tobago Energy Conference
The objective of the workshop was to facilitate discussion on a Just Transition for Trinidad and Tobago ensuring that the benefits of transitioning to a green economy are shared by all stakeholders taking into account environmental considerations, structural changes to labour markets and emerging technologies.

On 25 January 2023, the ILO participated in the Just Transition Workshop - Preparing Trinidad and Tobago for a Just Transition - organized by the British High Commission, Port of Spain, the Trinidad and Tobago Energy Chamber, and Ministry of Planning and Development.
The objective of the workshop was to facilitate discussion on a Just Transition for Trinidad and Tobago ensuring that the benefits of transitioning to a green economy are shared by all stakeholders taking into account environmental considerations, structural changes to labour markets and emerging technologies. This session highlighted the critical role of the Just Transition in sustainable development and showcased real-world examples from Mr. Kishan Kumarsingh, Head, Multilateral Environmental Agreements Unit; Mr. Luca Corradi, Director of Net Zero Technology Services and Innovation Network; Dr. Kevin Finch, Manager, Research Department, Central Bank, Trinidad and Tobago; and Ms. Marissa Sheppard, ILO National Project Officer, Nationally Determined Contributions Just Transition in Antigua and Barbuda.
During the ILO's presentation on "the Impact of a Just Transition on Labour Market and Costs", Ms. Marissa Sheppard stressed the importance of active promotion and engagement in social dialogue with all stakeholders, at all stages from policy design to implementation and evaluation. She also stressed the need to build consensus among tripartite partners and key stakeholders from national to enterprise level to forge on pathways towards environmental sustainability with decent work.
Ms. Sheppard also highlighted that many opportunities that exist for job creation in the Latin American and Caribbean region as well as the vital interactions necessary for building and implementing Just Transition Strategies for countries. The ILO’s current work in Antigua and Barbuda and its upcoming work in Jamaica, Guyana and Suriname relating to green job development and assessment were also discussed. Financing tools and polices were also presented during the ILO’s intervention.
