The European Commission (EC) recently adopted the Social investment package, urging Member States to put more emphasis on social investment by enhancing people’s capacities and supporting their participation in the labour market.
By adopting the package, the EC underlines that social investment is an inevitable element of generating growth and employment and is at the core of the welfare state. The package constitutes the fourth building block of a set of efforts by the EC to address the social consequences of the crisis and to prepare closer coordination of EU policies. The three other components are the White Paper on pensions (February 2012), the Employment Package (April 2012) and the Youth Employment Package (December 2012).
