ILO Offers Training to Agricultural Labour Intermediaries
The training seeks to enhance the understanding and awareness of agricultural labour intermediaries of the efforts to combat child labour, key actors in the integration of seasonal agricultural workers into the workforce, thereby supporting the reduction of child labour.

ŞANLIURFA/DİYARBAKIR (ILO News) – The International Labour Organization (ILO) organized an “Information and Training Seminar for Agricultural Intermediaries” within the scope of the An Integrated Model for the Elimination of Worst Forms of Child Labour in Seasonal Agriculture in Hazelnut Agriculture in Türkiye and the project Elimination of Worst Forms of Child Labour in Seasonal Agriculture in Hazelnut Harvesting in Türkiye.
The trainings seek to enhance the understanding and awareness of agricultural labour intermediaries of the efforts to combat child labour due to their important role in the integration of seasonal agricultural workers into the workforce, thereby contributing to the reduction of child labour.
The training is also considered as an activity aimed at certifying agricultural business intermediaries to work in a registered manner as stipulated in the Regulation on Business Intermediation in Agriculture.
The training included sessions headed by Prof. Dr. Murat Gürkan Gülcan, who provided foundational knowledge on “Child Labour and Education”, by OHS Specialist Ertan Uzunçakmak who addressed the issue of “Occupational Health and Safety in Agriculture”, and by Labour and Occupational Consultant Cengiz Buzkuş, who discussed “Legal Responsibilities of Agricultural Business Intermediaries” with the participants.
Joining the training in Şanlıurfa on 12 December, 2023 were Emin Türker, Head of the Employment Policies Department of the General Directorate of Labour under the Ministry of Labour and Social Security; Koray Abacı, Senior Project Coordinator at the ILO Türkiye Office; and Onur Torun, Chairman of the Board of Pikolo Association. The session held on 14 December, 2023 in Diyarbakir, on the other hand, saw the participation of Turan Türk, Labour Expert of the General Directorate of Labour under the Ministry of Labour and Social Security; Koray Abacı, Senior Project Coordinator at the ILO Türkiye Office; and Onur Torun, Chairman of the Board of Pikolo Association. Also participating in the trainings were agricultural intermediaries from Batman, Mardin and Adıyaman. After the training sessions, the 94 participating agricultural labour intermediaries were presented with certificates prepared by İŞKUR Provincial Directorates.
In his assessment of the events, ILO Senior Project Coordinator Koray Abacı emphasized the pivotal roles played by agricultural business intermediaries in seasonal agriculture, and stated that the trainings had successfully delivered vital knowledge on the efforts to combat child labour to them, ensuring occupational health and safety and the fulfilment of legal responsibilities, thereby enlightening them about their rights and responsibilities in the fight against child labour.
