ILO Mission to Tajikistan
ILO Subregional Office in Moscow visited Tajikistan on November 21-30 2004 with an official mission. The aims of the visit were to evaluate the CIDA-funded project on Start and Improve Your Business in Tajikistan, visit the regional sites of the SIYB training seminars in Tursun-Zode and Kurgan-Tube, meet social partners, international organization active in this field and other interested parties in order to discuss possible continuation of the SIYB/KAB programme in Tajikistan.

At the press conference that took place on November 29 2004 Mariko Ouchi, Employment and Social Protection Specialist and evaluator of the SIYB project in Tajikistan expressed her hopes that the ILO will continue its activities on this programme in this country and further expand them by a pilot project on KAB component in a number of vocational schools. The agreement to closely cooperate on this issue was reached at the meetings with Mr. Mamadsho Ilolov, Minister of Labour of RT and Mr. Subhon Ashurov, Deputy Minister for the issues of facilitating the inclusion of KAB component in their national curriculum at highschool level including some vocational schools.
The press conference also featured the recent developments of the “Combating human trafficking and the forced labour outcomes in Central Asia and the Russian Federation” project. Sten Toft Petersen, the Head of the Project told journalists, tripartite partners and representatives of the international organizations and NGOs about the implementation progress and planned activities under this project. „It is vitally improtant that not only the state but also local authorities and communities including religious leaders as well as the families of migrants are involved in solving of the problems of migration and trafficking“. Mr. Petersen also shared with the audience the ILO plans to develop information campaign using TV, radio, advertisments and even stage a play aimed at enlightment of the people. Under discussion is also the possibility of an information campaign among army conscripts. Starting from January 1 2005 an agreement between the trade unions of construction workers of both countries will start being implemented. Besides the Republic of Tajikistan is considering the ratification of the ILO Conventions No. 97 and 143.
