ILO Media Advisory: Final ILO-MLSS Validation and Dissemination Workshop on the Formalization of the Informal Economy Project in Jamaica

The ILO, in collaboration with the Ministry of Labour and Social Security, Jamaica, will hold a final validation Workshop from 10-11 November 2015, to review the activities of a 1-year pilot Project which falls under the ILO Programme for the Promotion of Formalization in Latin America and the Caribbean. The Project was implemented within the Granville and Garlands communities of St. James, Western Jamaica.

The Project offered training opportunities for young people and those operating informal businesses. Topics covered included:
  • how to start and improve your business;
  • artisan entrepreneurship;
  • business, marketing and financial planning;
  • SME development; entrepreneurship development;
  • cooperatives;
  • workers' rights; and
  • social dialogue.
Participants will also discuss options to expand the project to other communities in Jamaica. Ms Brenda Cuthbert, CEO, Jamaica Employers’ Federation; Mr Lloyd Goodleigh, President, Jamaica Confederation of Trade Unions; and Ms Dagmar Walter, Deputy Director, ILO Decent Work Team and Office for the Caribbean are carded to address the opening ceremony. Mr. Kelvin Sergeant, ILO Specialist for Sustainable Enterprise Development and Job Creation, along with Mr Juan Chacaltana from the ILO Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean, Lima, Peru, and Ms Vicky Leung, ILO Headquarters, Geneva, will make presentations at the Workshop.
