ILO Maritime Labour Convention in Russia

The event was organized by the Seafarers’ Union of Russia and the Confederation of Labour of Russia and brought together representatives of seafarers’ unions, the International Labour Organization, the Ministry of Transport, the federal migration service and ship owners’ associations.

Participants in the conference discussed the issues that emerge in the process of the implementation of the Convention that will enter into force on August 20, 2013. In particular, they focused on discrepancies existing in the Russian legislation and the Convention’s provisions.

Cleopatra Doumbia-Henry, Director of the ILO International Labour Standards Department, emphasized that little time is left before the Convention enters into force. Already in 2013 this Convention will spread on seafarers serving on board ships flying flags of 30 states practically from all regions of the world, which represent a total share 60 percent of the world’s gross tonnage of ships.
