ILO leads development of Nigeria’s Just Transition roadmap for a sustainable and inclusive economy

The International Labour Organization (ILO), in collaboration with national and international partners, is spearheading the development of Nigeria’s Just Transition Roadmap (JTRN). This initiative aims to guide the country’s shift toward a low-carbon economy while ensuring economic inclusion, job security, and social protection for workers and communities. By integrating policies that support sustainable industries, skills development, and equitable economic transformation, the roadmap will strengthen Nigeria’s resilience to climate change and promote decent work opportunities.
The International Labour Organization (ILO), in partnership with the National Council on Climate Change Secretariat (NCCCS), the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), has initiated the development of Nigeria’s Just Transition Roadmap (JTRN). This strategic framework will facilitate the country’s transition to a sustainable and inclusive low-carbon economy, while prioritizing job creation, workers’ rights, and economic resilience.
At the inception workshop in Abuja, Director General of the NCCCS, Dr. Nkiruka Maduekwe, emphasized the importance of aligning Nigeria’s climate policies with economic inclusion and sustainability goals. The roadmap will build upon existing frameworks such as the National Development Plan, Energy Transition Plan, and Climate Change Act, ensuring a fair and comprehensive shift to renewable energy.
Speaking on behalf of ILO, UNDP, and UNIDO, Stephen Agugua, ILO’s National Project Coordinator for the Social Dimension of Ecological Transition, underscored the roadmap’s significance in addressing the opportunities and challenges associated with Nigeria’s green transition. The JTRN will focus on supporting workers affected by shifts from fossil fuel-based industries, fostering capacity-building, promoting gender-responsive policies, and enhancing skills development for emerging green sectors.
ILO remains committed to advocating for policies that foster a just transition, ensuring that economies grow sustainably while creating decent work and reducing poverty. As part of the roadmap’s development, stakeholders will be engaged through regional workshops in Lagos, Kano, and Port Harcourt to ensure comprehensive and inclusive participation.
With this initiative, Nigeria is poised to strengthen its climate resilience and accelerate sustainable economic development, reinforcing its commitment to leaving no one behind in the global transition toward a greener future.
