TOKYO (ILO News) – The Director-General of the International Labour Organization (ILO), Guy Ryder, will visit Japan from 10 to 13 May 2017. He is expected to hold a series of high-level meetings with Ministers and parliamentarians as well as with senior representatives from employers’ and workers’ organizations.
During this visit, the ILO and the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare will sign a new Memorandum of Cooperation. The memorandum aims at strengthening their bonds of cooperation in the context of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development – including Goal 8 promoting full and productive employment and decent work for all – and of the ILO’s initiative on the future of work.
Guy Ryder will also take part in a Future of Work Symposium highlighting the profound changes currently taking place in the world of work. The Future of Work Symposium - organized together with the Japan Institute for Labour Policy and Training (JILPT) as part of its Labour Policy Forum series - will take place at the U Thant International Conference Hall at the United Nations University (UNU) on 12 May.
Representatives from the Japanese employers’ and workers’ organizations, as well as leading academics will debate the challenges and opportunities facing the world of work, such as population ageing, technological innovation and artificial intelligence that are expected to significantly impact demographics as well as industrial and employment structures.
In addition, Mr Ryder is scheduled to meet high-level officials of the Tokyo Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (TOCOG) to consolidate a framework of collaboration aimed at advancing decent work in connection with the 2020 Games.
This is Guy Ryder’s second official visit to Japan since he took office in October 2012. He was re-elected for a second five-year term in November 2016.
