ILO Deputy Director-General to meet with Indonesia’s key labour actors to discuss a wide range of employment issues
The first official visit of ILO Deputy Director-General, Celeste Drake, to Indonesia to witness the contributions and relevance of the ILO-Indonesia programme cooperation and to stimulate dialogue and workforce planning in the era of AI.

JAKARTA, Indonesia (ILO News) - The Deputy Director-General of the International Labour Organization (ILO), Ms Celeste Drake, will visit Indonesia from 18 to 21 June 2024. This visit marks the first official visit of Ms Drake to Indonesia and to the Asia region since assuming her duties in Geneva in August 2023.
During her visit, Ms Drake is scheduled to engage in dialogue with key Indonesian labour market actors who represent the tripartite constituents of the ILO: Minister of Manpower, Ida Fauziyah, Chairperson of Indonesian Employers’ Association (APINDO), Shinta Widjaja Kamdani, and the leaders of six Trade Union Confederations.
She will also address and participate in a High-Level Forum titled “Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Implications on the Indonesian Labour Market”, together with Airlangga Hartarto, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, who will deliver the keynote speech. The AI Forum will bring together relevant national stakeholders to stimulate reflection on Indonesia’s current situation and define key priority areas for intervention and future support in the world of work-related areas. A courtesy meeting with Luhut Pandjaitan, Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment will also take place.
In addition, the ILO Deputy Director-General will conduct a field visit to Pengalengan, Bandung, West Java, to learn about and engage with dairy cattle farmers under the South Bandung Livestock Cooperative (PKBS) Pengalengan, who have received entrepreneurship and financial education training, including digital finance, by the ILO in Indonesia.
“The visit provides important recognition of the primacy of the work of both ILO and Indonesian entities in tackling labour market challenges and harnessing opportunities to make a positive difference in the working lives of Indonesian women and men and the economy. It provides an opportunity to solidify a human-centred vision for a constantly and rapidly evolving labour market, one that is not isolated from regional and global trends, including crises and technologies,” said Simrin Singh, ILO Country Director for Indonesia and Timor-Leste.
Indonesia and the ILO have collaborated very closely since the country became a member of the ILO on 12 June 1950.
