ILO creates more decent jobs through community infrastructure works in Aleppo

Aleppo, Syria (ILO News)- As part of the emergency employment scheme for ‘Employment-intensive labour market recovery from the earthquakes in Aleppo’ the International Labour Organization (ILO) has renewed its partnership in Syria with “COOPI, Cooperazione Internazionale”.

The project, funded by the Japanese government and implemented in Aleppo Governorate, is now targeting the Kadi Askar Sector and Ramoseh area, both heavily impacted by conflict and earthquakes. The initiative aims to create job opportunities for 140 individuals, including both skilled and low-skilled workers, and is expected to generate a total of 10,920 workdays over a three-month period.

Following a comprehensive assessment, on-site work commenced in August 2024. The ILO has actively engaged with the municipality and key community members from the outset to assess the needs in these areas. The project involves debris removal, sidewalk rehabilitation, and the repair of the sewage and stormwater networks in the Kadi Askar district in Aleppo, employing 90 workers. Additionally, 50 workers are involved in debris material sorting and recycling activities at the recycling station in the Al Ramoseh area of the city.

The project is anticipated to achieve the following results over the three-month period:

• 2,000 cubic meters of debris removed
• 2,000 cubic meters of debris recycled for material production
• 196 rain drainage inlets cleared
• 219 manholes and connected pipes repaired
• 35 square meters of asphalts paved
• 54 sewage pipes replaced.

"This project is a great opportunity for me. The savings I've earned from my work will be incredibly helpful for me this coming winter. Additionally, I am happy to be able to contribute to my community," said a worker in Kadi Askar.

As part of the project, the ILO is currently developing a Social and Environmental Safeguard Framework for cash-for-work initiatives to mainstream decent work principles.
