ILO contributes to CANTA workshop on skills for the future and the development of occupational profiles
Three-day event reviewed and updated existing regional occupational standards

Occupational standards prescribe standards of performance in the workplace together with specifications of the supporting knowledge, skills, and attitudes. They bridge the worlds of work and education by describing the main components of a job and providing information to support training development and mobility in the labour market.
The Caribbean Association of National Training Agencies (CANTA) recently hosted a session on updating regional occupational standards. The review took place during a three-day hybrid workshop, from June 12 to 14 2023, that was attended by members of CANTA's Occupational Standards Committee.
Ms. Ilca Webster, Skills and Lifelong Learning Specialist of the International Labour Organization (ILO) Decent Work Team and Office for the Caribbean, delivered a presentation on skills assessment and anticipation at this workshop. The presentation emphasized the importance of assessing and anticipating skills for developing and updating occupational standards. It also highlighted ILO’s recent studies, products, and tools that were developed to support this process.
“Drivers of change, such as the transition to greener economies, demographics, climate, and technological changes, constantly modify the skills demand. Skills assessment and anticipation are key to keep occupational standards up to date with the skills demanded in labour markets and by doing so they can facilitate employability and labour mobility in the region,” explained Ms. Webster.
Following the workshop, CANTA and the ILO will continue to exchange about the implementation of effective skills assessment and anticipation systems in the region.
