ILO Chief Guy Ryder to discuss labour issues with Lebanese host communities and Syria refugees, ahead of signature of MOU with Lebanon
Following the visit, which will also encompass a visit to a community centre for the rehabilitation of child labourers, and the location of a new labour-intensive infrastructure-building project, the ILO, Ministry of Labour and social partners will sign a memorandum of understanding to increase cooperation to realize decent work in Lebanon.

BEIRUT (ILO News) - ILO Director-General Guy Ryder and Regional Director for Arab States Ruba Jaradat will accompany the Lebanese Minister of Labour Mohammad Kabbara to the Beqaa region in Lebanon on Sunday 2 April, to discuss with members of Lebanese host communities and Syria refugees issues relating to employment and working conditions in light of the refugee crisis.
The delegation will also visit the Community Centre against Child Labour in the Beqaa town of Saadnayel. One of three first-of-their kind centres in Lebanon, the Community Centre provides services to rehabilitate children withdrawn from child labour, as well as those at risk of engaging in child labour. The Centre is an initiative by the ILO, the Ministry of Labour and the NGO Beyond Association.
They will then visit a location in Aley, outside Beirut, where the ILO will implement a labour-intensive infrastructure-building project, which will formally employ Lebanese and Syrian workers to build much-needed infrastructure projects in areas hosting the majority of Syrian refugees. The project, a joint initiative with the MOL and UNDP, will adopt the ILO’s Employment Intensive Investment Programme (EIIP) approach, which will generate an estimated 6,000 short-term jobs, amongst other targets.
Guy Ryder’s visit to Lebanon will end on Monday 3 April, when he will participate in a regional high-level meeting on the Future of Work in the Arab region, to be held at the Moevenpick Hotel in Beirut.

MOU for Decent Work Country Programme for Lebanon
Following the visit to the Beqaa, Ryder, Kabbara and Jaradat will attend an evening ceremony at the Moevenpick Hotel in Beirut to sign a memorandum of understanding with Trade Union and Employer representatives, to pave the way for instituting Lebanon’s first Decent Work Country Programme. The Programme will see the ILO, MoL and workers’ and employers’ organizations intensify operations in the areas of improving labour policy development, working conditions, employment opportunities, provision of social security, and labour migration regulation and governance.Guy Ryder’s visit to Lebanon will end on Monday 3 April, when he will participate in a regional high-level meeting on the Future of Work in the Arab region, to be held at the Moevenpick Hotel in Beirut.
