ILO Chief for Africa to visit Lesotho
The Regional Director for Africa of the International Labour Organization (ILO), Aeneas Chapinga Chuma, on his first official visit to Maseru, Lesotho from 26-28 November 2014.

MASERU (ILO News) – The Assistant Director-General and Regional Director for Africa of the International Labour Organization (ILO) Aeneas Chapinga Chuma will make his first official working visit to Maseru, Lesotho from 26-28 November 2014.
During his trip, Mr Chuma is expected to meet with the Honourable Minister of Labour and Employment, senior representatives of the employers’ and workers’ organizations as well as the Office of UN Resident Coordinator.
The ILO is working closely with the tripartite constituents – government, employers and the workers’ organizations in Lesotho to promote the implementation of the “Decent Work Agenda” through the implementation of the second phase of the Lesotho Decent Work Country Programme: 2012-2017.
The Lesotho Decent Work Country Programme is the ILO’s contribution to the work of the United Nations Development Assistance Framework Action Plan, the LUNDAP. The LUNDAP in turn is aligned to national aspirations articulated in the five-year National Strategic Development Plan (NSDP) of the Government of Lesotho which covers the period 2012/13-2016/17.
The main areas of ILO support includes inter alia; the revision of the national labour code, in line with labour standards; the establishment of the long envisaged comprehensive national social security scheme and the finalisation of the national employment policy.
Mr Chuma will also visit ILO Better Work project in Lesotho. Lesotho remains the leading sub-Saharan African garment exporter to the US in value terms under the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) which grant duty- and quota-free export of apparel products from qualifying sub-Saharan African countries. This programme has contributed to improvements in Occupational Safety and Health. It has also played a role in bolstering the country’s maternity laws. As of late 2013, workers in the factory for one year or more are now entitled six weeks paid maternity leave, increasing from two weeks.
