ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia (ILO News) – Aeneas Chapinga Chuma, ILO Assistant Director-General and Regional Director for Africa, addressed for the first time the government delegates of the African region gathered in Geneva, Switzerland for the 320th session of the Governing Body.
Mr Chuma briefed African ministerial delegations on the current state of preparations and support provided by the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and its partners to the African Union Extraordinary Summit of Heads of State and Government to be held in September 2014 in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.
“Ouagadougou+10” will evaluate progress over the past 10 years on Employment, Poverty Eradication and Inclusive Development in Africa and map a way forward, the Regional Director stated. This Summit will translate a strong commitment and the “political milestone” of 2004 to an influential engine for actual change.
The ILO is committed to supporting the Ouagadougou process and is already working closely with the African Union Commission on preparations, both for the Special Ministerial Session on “Ouagadougou+10” and the Meeting of the Labour and Social Affairs Commission (LASC) which will convene next month in Windhoek, Namibia.
Aenas Chuma shared also his initial thoughts for the ILO’s work in the African region in the time ahead: Employment creation, with a focus on young women and men; Social protection; Sound labour relations and social dialogue, anchored on International Labour Standards; and Labour migration.
“The ILO is committed to the success of Ouagadougou+10. The ILO is committed to the change process that is required in order to realise the outcomes of this important meeting of African leaders. Because, the meeting is not only an event, it is indeed the launch and continuation of a region-wide process”, the ILO Chief for Africa concluded.
