ILO Chief for Africa to attend ZCTU 50th Anniversary in Zambia
ILO will take part in Zambian Congress of Trade Unions’ (ZCTU) golden jubilee events to mark fifty years of active service in championing organised workers’ rights in Zambia.

LUSAKA (ILO news) The ILO Assistant Director-General and Regional Director for Africa, Mr Aeneas Chapinga Chuma will be in Lusaka for the 50th anniversary of the Zambia Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) which takes place on Friday 21st October, 2016.
Mr Chuma, representing the ILO Director General Guy Ryder, will be attending the celebrations, which are to be held in the presence of President Edgar Lungu of Zambia.
Since its inception in 1966, ZCTU has been at the forefront of advocating for organised workers’ rights in Zambia and has made significant strides in the last fifty years in Labour law formulation, promotion of social security and occupation health and safety, and has been a firm supporter of gender equality, speaking against unacceptable forms of work for all workers.
The ILO focuses on the importance of cooperation between governments and employers’ and workers’ organizations like ZCTU in fostering social and economic progress and its aim is to ensure that it serves the needs of workers by bringing together relevant stakeholders to set labour standards, develop policies and devise programmes, which can help to form, national, regional and global policies. The ILO joins hands with ZCTU to celebrate this very important 50th anniversary.
The event is expected to draw participation from government officials, former ZCTU executive members and representatives from other workers organisations. The event will also be used to launch the “Zambia Congress of Trade Unions History Book.”
The ILO Assistant Director-General will award the ZCTU Golden Jubilee Pin to His Excellency the President of the Republic of Zambia Mr Edgar Chagwa Lungu. Others expected to be awarded with the Golden Jubilee Pin are Dr. Kenneth Kaunda, first republican president and his successor President Fredrick Chiluba, who will be awarded posthumously.
