Cairo (ILO News)- The ILO Cairo Office Director, Mr. Peter Van Rooij, went on his first official visit to Eritrea to attend the International Symposium on "Trade Unions Reforms in Africa" and the 38th session of the General Council of the Organization of African Trade Union Unity "OATUU" hosted by the National Confederation of Eritrean Workers.
The Post 2015 Development Agenda
In his speech, Mr. Peter Van Rooij discussed the post 2015 development agenda. He stated that the implementation of sustainable development goals will depend on a global partnership for sustainable development with the active engagement of governments, as well as civil society, the private sector, and the United Nations system. Peter Van Rooij added that a strong mechanism of implementation review will be essential for the success of the sustainable development goals where there is an important role of the trade unions.
The international symposium brought together heads and delegates of Africa Trade Unions from 54 African countries and representatives from the Chinese, Italian and Turkish workers federations among other dignitaries.
Bilateral meetings During his visit form 22- 23 February 2015, Mr. Peter held bilateral meetings with the national tripartite constituents (Ministry of Labour and Human Welfare, the National Confederation of Eritrean Workers and Employer’s Federation of Eritrea).
The visit included discussions with the Head of European Delegation in Eritrea as well as the UN Resident Coordinator.
