Asia Pacific Regional Symposium on the follow up to the Campaign for Ratification and Application of ILO Conventions 87 (Freedom of Association)and 98 (Collective Bargaining)

NEW DELHI (ILO News): The ILO – Bureau for Workers’ Activities (ACTRAV) in collaboration with the Trade Unions in India is organizing “Asia Pacific Regional Symposium on the follow up to the Campaign for Ratification and Application of ILO Conventions 87 and 98” at Hotel Oberoi, "Connaught Hall" Dr. Zakir Hussain Marg, New Delhi from 11-13 September 2013.
This symposium is meant to review the ratification campaign conducted by the trade unions in Nepal, India, Thailand, Vietnam and Malaysia since 2009. The participants will be approximately thirty five in number representing the following countries: Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Cambodia, Malaysia, Nepal and Thailand. This symposium will be facilitated by ILO - ACTRAV colleagues from Geneva, Bangkok and India office. Representatives from Global Union Federation (GUFs) will also be facilitating the symposium.
This event began with the opening remarks by Ms. Tine Staermose, Director, ILO- DWT for South Asia and Country Office for India followed by the addresses of the representatives of major trade unions centres namely, Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS), Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC), All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), Hind Mazdoor Sabha (HMS), Centre for Indian Trade Unions (CITU) and Global Union Federations (GUF). “Freedom of association and collective bargaining are fundamental, basic minimum rights for all workers, trade unions have a big role to play in the ratification and application of ILO conventions” said Ms. Staermose.
In the inaugural address, Ms. Anuja Bapat, Director, Ministry of Labour and Employment assured the participants that Govt of India is in the process of exploring ways to ratify conventions and this is one of the priority areas of the current Decent Work Country Programme (DWCP).
Eminent leaders from other countries will also participate and present their campaign experiences.
