ILO builds the capacity of Syria’s Labour inspectorate
The ILO and partners have contributed to building the capacity of Syria’s Labour inspectorate through workshops with health and safety inspectors.

DAMASCUS (ILO News) – A five day ILO-led workshop has trained over 30 labour inspectors from different governorates on key occupational safety and health (OSH) principles in order to enhance the capacity of Syria’s Labour inspectorate.
The workshop took place in cooperation with the ILO’s International Training Centre (ITC) and the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labour (MOSAL) and was attended by representatives from employers’ and workers’ organizations in Syria. Through the exchange of best practices rooted in International Labour Standards, ILO trainers and participants reviewed innovative and successful strategies to enhance occupational safety and health and inspection in the Syrian Arab Republic.
International OSH experts made presentations during the workshop, using Zoom combined with simultaneous translation between English and Arabic. The materials used in the online lessons were also translated into both languages, and the teaching team was selected according to their professional experience and knowledge of these topics. Continuous monitoring and evaluation of the activity was carried out during the workshop, and at the end of the course an individual end-of-course evaluation questionnaire was used to allow the participants to express their opinions as well as provide feedback. A competency test was also carried out upon conclusion of the workshop with successful participants receiving an ITC-ILO Certificate of achievement on Introduction to the Occupational Safety and Health inspection.
In the run up to the workshop, participants were given access to an E-Learning platform to set the stage for the study of selected online modules and other resources around main concepts of OSH. Additionally, participants were presented with pertinent documentation in order to expand their knowledge about the specified topics. The hybrid in-person and online workshop allowed participants to pose questions and comments on preparation materials, allowing concentration on topics of the participants' interests.
