Since the start of the COVID-19 crisis, Employer and Business Membership Organizations (EBMOs) have played a critical role in assisting businesses, and digital service delivery has been a key component of this response. The pandemic has accelerated digitalization trends for EBMOs, shedding light on the critical need to digitize core services. To operate effectively in digitally enabled, rapidly changing environments, they must innovate and adapt their members' business models, including operating and governance practices.
Like the businesses they represent and serve, EBMOs face continual competition from new actors, new pressures, and ongoing changes in the world of business. Amid such change, EBMOs must define and deliver a new value proposition to their members to ensure that they remain relevant, representative and influential.
More than half of Caribbean EBMOs now report that they provide virtual advisory and consultancy services, as well as virtual training using websites, data management software and programmes, applications, and other online resources. As a result, they recognize the need to implement a Digital Transformation Strategy to remain relevant, representative, and influential.
Many of them have faced or will face membership challenges, as some companies traditionally cut "discretionary" costs during economic downturns. Lower membership income may start a vicious cycle, weakening EMBOs’ ability to provide services when they are most needed. All of this is happening at a time when EBMOs' role as the private sector's voice to decision-makers must be expanded, not diminished.
That is why it was critical to find the right tool to help Caribbean EBMOs to build new relationships with potential members and ensure that their engagement strategy and subsequent marketing of membership, services, and assistance is data driven.
In light of this challenge and to improve the EBMOs processes, the ILO assisted Antigua and Barbuda Employers’ Federation (ABEF), the Bahamas Chamber of Commerce and Employers’ Confederation (BCCEC), the Belize Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI), the Grenada Employers’ Federation (GEF), the Jamaica Employers’ Federation (JEF), and the Saint Lucia Employers’ Federation (SLEF) in the installation of a Customer Relationship Management (CRM) System.
The ITC CRM (Customer Relationship Management) software has been identified as a potent tool for effecting immediate change. It helps to achieve these goals by assisting with member recruitment, retention strategies, and much more.
The installation and training were completed in September 2022 and the EBMOs, with support from the ILO, have built internal capacity to make arrangements in their working methods and to develop a more effective and efficient use of their institutional capacities in response to changing organizational needs.
