ILO and UNICEF to collaborate on child protection in Bangladesh
UN Agencies have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to reinforce their joint efforts to combat child labour and strengthen child protection services.
DHAKA (ILO News) - The International Labour Organization (ILO) and United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) have agreed to reinforce their collaboration in Bangladesh, in particular relating to efforts to strengthen child protection services and to combat child labour.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between ILO and UNICEF in Dhaka by Mr Srinivas B. Reddy, ILO Country Director for Bangladesh and Mr Edouard Beigbeder, UNICEF Representative in Bangladesh.
Speaking at the signing which took place at the ILO Country Office for Bangladesh, Srinivas Reddy said, “By working together, ILO and UNICEF can make a real difference to the lives of millions of children and help the Government meet its goal of eliminating child labour in Bangladesh by 2025.”
“Combining the expertise, reach and influence of both UNICEF and ILO will play a critical role in ensuring achievement of the Government of Bangladesh’s goal of eliminating child labour by 2025, improving well-being of children and women and ensuring progress in other important areas for children. We look forward to seeing the impact of this innovative collaboration”, said Edouard Beigbeder.
The partnership will see ILO and UNICEF work together to strengthen child protection systems and adopt common tools, approaches and strategies relating to children engaged in worst forms of child labour. Actions will include coordinated dialogue and advocacy with the Government of Bangladesh, harmonized efforts to build the capacity of Government and industry institutions and joint initiatives to provide quality social services for working parents (especially working mothers) and their children.
