ILO and UNDP to strengthen their cooperation in Sierra Leone
The ILO pledged support to the UN system in Sierra Leone and its commitment to working with the Resident Coordinator’s Office and other UN sister Agencies as the UN strives to support the national development agenda.

The International Labour Organization (ILO) Abuja Country Office has congratulated the United Nations Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative for the Republic of Sierra Leone, Mr. David McLachlan-Karr, on his new appointment.
In a congratulatory message sent to the Resident Coordinator of the Republic of Sierra Leone, the Director of ILO Office for Nigeria, Ghana, Liberia, Sierra Leone and the Gambia and Liaison Office for ECOWAS, Mrs. Sina Chuma-Mkandawire stated that the appointment of Mr. McLachlan-Karr to the high office bore a true testimony of the United Nations’ recognition of his qualifications and experience.
Mrs. Chuma-Mkandawire pledged the ILO’s continued support to UN system in Sierra Leone and affirmed the commitment of the ILO to working with the Resident Coordinator’s Office and other UN sister Agencies as the UN strives to support the Government and people of Sierra Leone in their pursuit of their national development agenda.
She informed the Resident Coordinator that the ILO has been an active member of the United Nations Country Team (UNCT) in Sierra Leone and has contributed towards the implementation of a number of Government of Sierra Leone’s Programmes supported by the United Nations. “Most notable of these include the Quick Impact Employment Intensive Programme which was funded through the UN’s Multi Donor Trust Fund, the Tackling Child Labour through Education Project and Fighting HIV and AIDS in the World of Work. Currently the ILO is supporting the Government of Sierra Leone in undertaking a Labour Force Survey whose results will be expected at the end of 2014. The ILO will also soon be embarking on the preparation of a new Decent Work Country Programme to be aligned to the UNDAF and will provide a blue print for ILO's work in Sierra Leone in the coming four years”.
In his response, Mr. David McLachlan-Karr stated that the ILO sentiments reaffirming its commitment as a Non-Resident Agency (NRA) to working with the UNCT in Sierra Leone were very much appreciated. He acknowledged that the ILO had an important role to play in the context of Sierra Leone’s development, especially in relation to creation of decent work opportunities for the youth of Sierra Leone. He reminded the ILO that its contribution was a priority of the Government of Sierra Leone that featured prominently in the national Agenda for Prosperity, adding that the new UNDAF 2015-2018 has given an important role to the ILO in carrying out research and work that will promote global best practices in labour law, economic diversification, and job creation in the country. He noted that a lot of work had already been done to complete the Labour Force Survey in 2014 and the roll-out of the new Decent Work Country Programme (DWCP) that would commence later in 2014. He saluted the valuable work the ILO has been implementing in West Africa and looked forward to working with the ILO Director and her team to further ILO’s aims in Sierra Leone.
